Last week, we were questioning the use of AI as a medical substitute in America's hospital deserts, a textbook case where a technology fills a void no one else wants to fill. This week, an entirely different logic is taking hold: no longer one of filling gaps, but one of control.

Since April 4, Anthropic has decided that Claude Pro and Max subscribers will no longer be able to run their agents on third-party tools like OpenClaw through their subscription. If you want to keep using Claude with these external harnesses, you'll have to switch to usage-based billing, which is significantly more expensive. The official justification fits in one sentence: subscriptions weren't designed for this type of intensive consumption. That's factually correct. An active OpenClaw agent can burn through between 1,000 and 5,000 dollars in API costs per day of operation. Anthropic was silently absorbing that gap for every user going through a third-party harness.

But the timing is less innocent. Peter Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw, joined OpenAI in February. A few weeks later, Anthropic announced the block. The company has also integrated into Claude Code several features that were precisely OpenClaw's strengths, notably messaging through external channels like Telegram or Discord. Coincidences that give pause. Steinberger put it bluntly: "First they copy the popular features into their closed harness, then they exclude open source."

What's happening here goes beyond pricing mechanics. Anthropic, with its projected 30 billion dollars in annual revenue and its enterprise partner network launched in March, is building a closed platform. The discourse around safety and alignment has always coexisted with a frank commercial ambition, and this move is the clearest translation of that to date. Wanting to control the customer relationship, the data, the governance of usage: all of this is perfectly rational for a company at this stage of growth. It's less so for a developer community that had believed in the promise of an open ecosystem.

The all-you-can-eat buffet is over. The bill is coming.
