Anthropic just walked it back, and that's great news for everyone. The original plan was crystal clear: pull Claude Fable 5, their best model, from standard subscriptions and reserve it for API pricing only. A decision driven by compute capacity constraints, since GPUs don't grow on trees. But as of July 20, it's a full U-turn: Fable 5 is now permanently included in all Max and Team Premium plans, at 50% of usage limits. Pro users also get a one-time $100 credit to keep accessing it through usage credits.
Make no mistake, this reversal has nothing to do with generosity. Competition forced Anthropic's hand. GPT-5.6 Sol on one side, and on the other Kimi K3, the new Moonshot AI model we covered last week, which is nipping at Fable 5's heels on agentic work evaluations while undercutting everyone on price. Hard to justify a $100 or $200 monthly subscription that doesn't include your own best model. Simon Willison sums up the mood nicely: plenty of users were literally losing sleep trying to squeeze the most out of Fable 5 before the deadline, a phenomenon he dubbed the Fablepocalypse. We've seen more dramatic ends of the world.
The real lesson here is that the frontier model market has become so competitive that no lab, not even Anthropic, can afford to ration its best product. When a Chinese open weight model with 2.8 trillion parameters shows up at half the price of Opus, artificial scarcity simply stops working as a strategy. The winners of this race are us, the users. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.
