Our take
Hi Synaptician Dotikers!
Remember last January: DeepSeek triggered a historic stock market earthquake. Nvidia lost $600 billion in a single day, unprecedented. This unknown Chinese startup had just proven you could develop a cutting-edge AI model for under $6 million, obliterating the business models of American giants pouring hundreds of billions into the field.
Today, DeepSeek doubles down with V3.1 and confirms three trends reshaping the industry:
Hybrid architecture is becoming the standard. V3.1 features a "DeepThink" mode for complex reasoning alongside a standard conversational mode. With 685 billion parameters (only 37 billion activated per token thanks to its MoE architecture), the model rivals GPT-5 and Claude 4 while being drastically more efficient.
Open source as a strategic weapon. Everything is accessible: model weights, source code, documentation. This radical transparency contrasts sharply with the opacity of Western models (except Mistral and Meta!) and enables anyone with the necessary infrastructure to deploy these models.
An intensifying price war. At $0.56 per million tokens, DeepSeek is up to 45 times cheaper than Anthropic, 6 times cheaper than OpenAI. Comparable performance for a fraction of the cost.
China's AI ecosystem is experiencing unprecedented momentum. Chinese players are multiplying and systematically undercutting prices (MiniMax, Z.ai, ByteDance, Alibaba, Moonshot...). It remains to be seen whether OpenAI's recent response with GPT-5 will be enough, and how Mistral and Europe will react to this new reality that's upending the global AI balance of power.
