Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Yesterday, we were questioning OpenAI's trajectory: a mysterious model nicknamed Spud, a division rebranded as "AGI Deployment," and an organization redirecting all its resources toward a single big promise. Google, on the other hand, isn't making big promises anymore. It's delivering.

Gemini 3.1 Flash Live has been available since this morning, and this isn't just another model added to an ever-growing list: it's a targeted, almost surgical update to the most strategic link in Google's voice chain. The stated objective is simple, tone comprehension, real-time fluency, reliability in noisy environments, but what's at stake is much broader.

The model scores 90.8% on ComplexFuncBench Audio, a benchmark that evaluates the ability to execute complex multi-step tasks, and 36.1% on Scale AI's Audio MultiChallenge, which specifically tests the ability to maintain the thread of a long instruction despite the natural interruptions and hesitations of the human voice. Put differently, Google is building a model that holds a conversation like a human, not like a bank's automated phone system circa 2012.

What's concretely changing: Gemini Live can now follow a conversation thread twice as long as before. Search Live, powered by the same model, is expanding to over 200 countries this week. Verizon, The Home Depot, and LiveKit have already integrated it into production. And all generated audio is invisibly watermarked with SynthID, Google's in-house watermark against audio deepfakes.

Audio, long treated as the "nice to have" feature of consumer AI, is becoming a serious industrial playing field. While OpenAI focuses its compute energy on its next big model, Google is betting on the inference layers that companies will actually plug into their products tomorrow morning. It's not the most spectacular pitch on stage, but that's often where the market is won.
