Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Last week, we looked at how Anthropic is enriching its interface with interactive visualizations ; a way for AI labs to make their tools more readable, more useful, less abstract. Today, we zoom in on a different kind of clarity: the kind Google just bought itself in the cloud wars, for 32 billion dollars.

Google finalized its acquisition of Wiz this week, the largest in its history and the biggest ever involving a venture-backed startup. The number is staggering, but the story behind it is nearly as remarkable. Founded in 2020 by four co-founders, Wiz became the fastest software startup ever to reach $100 million in annual recurring revenue. And to top it off, the company had first turned down a $23 billion offer from Google in 2024, only to accept a $32 billion proposal from the same buyer a year later. Saying no to Google once takes conviction. Accepting nine billion more the following year takes good lawyers too.

In an interview published by TechCrunch, Shardul Shah, partner at Index Ventures and Wiz's largest shareholder, breaks down the appeal. His take is straightforward: Wiz sits at the intersection of three major forces ; AI, cloud, and security. That is not marketing language. It reflects the reality of a market where every AI agent deployment creates a new attack surface that traditional security tools were never built to handle.

Wiz will continue to operate under its own brand and remain available to customers running on other clouds, including AWS and Azure. That is where the real intelligence of the deal lies: Google is not buying exclusivity, it is buying multicloud credibility. The difference is significant. For AWS and Microsoft, who now effectively help fund their competitor through their own customers' Wiz subscriptions, the situation is at the very least uncomfortable.

This acquisition is not a one-off. It is a clear signal that cloud security has become a first-order strategic asset in the AI era, and that the industry's biggest players have no intention of leaving that ground to independent operators.
