Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Remember when ChatGPT felt like a quiet corner of the internet, free from the banner blindness we all developed years ago? That era is officially closing. OpenAI just announced that visual display ads will start appearing alongside image generation results in ChatGPT, rolling out later this month in the US with a test group of advertisers before an eventual global expansion.

On paper, the pitch is reassuring. Ads will be clearly labeled, they won't influence the answers ChatGPT gives you, and they only concern free and low-cost tiers. But let's be honest about what's happening here: OpenAI is building a full-blown advertising machine. The company isn't just slipping a few sponsored images into your feed. It's assembling a serious measurement stack with partners like AppsFlyer, Adjust and Branch, running geo-based ad experiments, and working with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand suitability. That's not a timid experiment. That's the blueprint of an ad empire targeting 1.2 billion weekly users.

And the timing is no accident. With Meta's Muse offering a free agentic AI app to everyone, OpenAI needs its free tier to pay for itself. The uncomfortable truth is that a slightly annoying free experience is also a conversion funnel: if the ads bother you enough, there's a subscribe button waiting with open arms. Turns out the most effective ad in ChatGPT might be the one that convinces you to pay to never see ads again.

This was always going to happen. You can't burn billions on compute and serve a billion users on goodwill alone. The real question isn't whether ads belong in AI assistants, it's whether OpenAI can resist letting them creep closer to the answers themselves. The labels are clear today. Let's see how clear they are in two years.

Alex.
