Our take
Hi Dotikers!
Your AI assistant just got a credit card. Well, almost. This week, Revolut and Visa announced they completed the first AI-initiated payment in real conditions in France, using an actual French Revolut card, real merchant systems, and Visa's Payment Passkey for authentication. The test, run under Visa's Agentic Ready program, let an AI agent handle the full purchase journey, from browsing to checkout, with the customer's explicit consent baked in at every step.
Why does this matter? Because agentic commerce is quietly becoming the next battleground in fintech. According to France's Baromètre du numérique, more than half of the French population already uses AI tools to research and compare products before buying. The logical next step is letting those same tools close the deal. Revolut and Visa just proved the plumbing works, without ripping out the existing payment infrastructure or fraud monitoring systems.
Let's be honest, this is a genuinely significant milestone, not just another PR stunt dressed up in AI buzzwords. The hard part of agentic payments was never the shopping, it was the trust layer: consent, issuer controls, fraud protection. Getting a real transaction through that gauntlet on live European rails is the proof of concept the industry needed. That said, the road from one supervised test to millions of autonomous purchases is long, and regulators will rightly want a word before your chatbot develops a taste for impulse buying at 3 a.m.
The bigger picture is clear: the checkout button is slowly dissolving into conversation. Banks and payment networks that prepare for agents as customers, not just humans, will own the next decade of commerce. Those who wait will find their cards sitting in someone else's wallet, or rather, someone else's model.
More on this as the agentic wave rolls in. For now, keep one hand on your wallet.
