Our take
Hi Dotikers!
A data center in orbit just wrote a haiku. That sentence alone tells you where we are in the AI race: Google's Suncatcher prototype, launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 earlier this month, is now online, running a single TPU and chatting with engineers on the ground. Its first assignment? A poem about floating above the blue marble. Somewhere, a very expensive satellite is moonlighting as a poet, and honestly, it has better work-life balance than most of us.
Beyond the stunt, the real story is the engineering test underneath. The TPU can only run for about twenty minutes at a time due to power constraints, and the whole campaign is designed to measure how radiation and thermal stress affect the chip in real conditions rather than in particle accelerator simulations. Bit flips, corrupted memory, degraded hardware: these are the unglamorous questions that will decide whether orbital compute is a genuine infrastructure play or an elaborate press release.
And this is where healthy skepticism is warranted. The economics only work if Starship becomes rapidly and fully reusable, with Suncatcher's own researchers estimating around 1,800 flights needed to hit the required cost curve. That is a moonshot stacked on top of another moonshot. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Alphabet's stock just took a hit because AI integration is squeezing its search ad revenue. There is something almost poetic, fittingly, about a company funding 2030s space infrastructure while its 2020s cash machine shows cracks.
Still, if even a fraction of this works, solar-powered inference in orbit with laser-linked satellite clusters could reshape how we think about compute, energy and cooling. Watch the two follow-up satellites planned for 2027. That is when we will know if this is the future of data centers or just very expensive haiku.
Alex.
