Our take
Hi Dotikers!
Nvidia buys Hugging Face, and it is no small thing
According to The Information, Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for 12.9 billion dollars. Neither company is confirming, and Business Insider points out that nothing has been signed. But the mere fact that the conversation is happening at that price says a lot. In late 2025, Nvidia offered to invest 500 million at a 7 billion valuation. Hugging Face said no. Eight months later, the offer has almost doubled.
Why the rush? Because Hugging Face is the GitHub of open models. Hundreds of thousands of models, and a community that discovers, adapts and deploys them. Nvidia already dominates compute. With this platform, it controls distribution too. And while OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are designing their own chips to rely on it a little less, Nvidia is making sure the open source ecosystem stays firmly plugged into its cards. If you sell the shovels, you might as well buy the map of the mine.
The catch is neutrality. Hugging Face prided itself on being hardware agnostic, AMD and Intel included. Hard to keep believing that once it sits under the roof of the manufacturer that already tried to grab ARM. Open AI will go on existing, just a little less open and a little more optimised for a single vendor. European regulators would do well to read this file before the ink dries.
The contrast with yesterday's article is delicious. MIT unveiled CrysVCD, a tool that helps AI design stable materials, including ones that could better cool data centres spending 30% of their energy on air conditioning. On one side, research is trying to make the infrastructure leaner and more accessible to small labs. On the other, the main supplier of that infrastructure is locking the front door. Two visions of AI moving in parallel. Only one of them has 12.9 billion on the table.

Your AI budget tripled. See real usage patterns with Harmonic.
AI spend just became one of the biggest line items on the P&L. And most teams can't say what it's actually producing.
Harmonic Security maps AI activity to the use cases and teams driving it, showing which tools are earning real productivity, which are shelfware, where sensitive data is going, and how adoption is trending over time. Across approved AND unapproved AI tools.
That's the data you need to show your board exactly where the return is coming from.
