Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Last time, we were tracking Alphabet raising $85 billion to fuel the AI race. This week, the one pocketing a good chunk of that windfall steps into the arena: on Thursday, Nvidia released Nemotron 3 Ultra, its largest open model to date.

On paper, the spec sheet impresses. 550 billion parameters with 55 active, a hybrid Mamba-Transformer architecture, a one-million-token context window, and above all the weights, datasets and training recipes published under a permissive license. Nvidia claims up to 30% savings and a speed three to six times higher than its Chinese rivals. All of it built for agents that plan, call tools and chain long tasks together.

That leaves the word "best" from the press release, which earns its quotation marks. Nemotron 3 Ultra is indeed the best American open model, but it sits six points behind China's Kimi K2.6 on the intelligence index. And on GDPval, which measures the real economic value of answers, it tops out at 47.9% while GPT-5.5 posts 84.9%. A frontier model, really?

The real story is elsewhere. While everyone pays Nvidia to make the shovels, Nvidia is now digging too. Selling both the hardware and the model means locking the entire chain, from chip to agent, into its own ecosystem. The much-touted speed is no accident either: it shows up mostly on its own GPUs.

For anyone who can't hand their data to a closed API, the option is serious and welcome. But calling a model that trails China and lags far behind the closed pack a "frontier" is, above all, drawing a commercial frontier.

Alex.
