Our take

Hi Dotikers!

OpenAI has opened ChatGPT Health to every adult in the US, across all plans, free tier included. The announcement landed one day after a former Florida pastor filed suit, claiming the chatbot talked him out of seeing a doctor for weeks, right up to the pulmonary embolism. It is the first legal action aimed squarely at health advice given by an AI, with an unauthorised practice of medicine claim thrown in.

The numbers explain the hurry: 230 million health queries a week in January, 300 million today. More importantly, 70% of those conversations were happening outside the dedicated space. So the real news is not the launch, it is the wall coming down. Your Epic, Oracle Health or Apple Health records can now feed any conversation, not just the tab built for it.

The product logic holds up. A model that can see your lab results will always answer better than a model guessing. What does not hold up is the liability architecture built around it. OpenAI captures the value of medical context while repeating that its tool is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, with no HIPAA coverage. A disclaimer in the terms of service has never diagnosed anyone, but it has already saved quite a few lawyers.

Put it next to yesterday's story and it gets dizzying. Voice on the desktop, multi step commands, visibility into the active app on macOS. Friction is being stripped out everywhere, including where friction was doing the work of a safety rail. Describing your symptoms out loud to your computer will soon stop being a figure of speech.

The lesson for anyone building: giving a model context means giving it authority. And authority needs a defensible scope, not a stylistic clause.

Alex.
