Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Imagine this: you're chatting with ChatGPT to find a gift, and instead of copying and pasting links to Amazon, you complete the purchase right there in the conversation. Well, it's real now. OpenAI just launched "Instant Checkout," turning ChatGPT into a shopping assistant that can finalize your purchases without ever leaving the chat window.

An ecosystem taking shape at breakneck speed

Behind this feature lies a strategic partnership with Stripe, handling all the payment infrastructure. Over a million Shopify merchants and thousands of Etsy sellers are already integrated, with brands like Glossier, Skims, Spanx, and Vuori in the mix. And this is just the beginning: OpenAI has decided to open-source its protocol (the Agentic Commerce Protocol), allowing any developer or merchant to integrate this conversational shopping experience.

Why is this huge? Because we're talking about a total revolution in e-commerce. For 20 years, Google and Amazon have controlled how you discover and buy products online. Today, OpenAI, Perplexity, Microsoft, and Google are locked in a fierce battle to become the new gatekeepers of online shopping.

And this is only the start. AI agents that shop on your behalf are about to become ubiquitous: in your emails, your messaging apps, your favorite platforms. Silicon Valley venture capitalists are unanimous: conversational commerce is one of the biggest markets of the coming years. We're talking hundreds of billions of dollars that will migrate to these new channels.

But beware the trap of the salesperson disguised as an assistant

OpenAI claims today that its recommendations are "organic and unsponsored, ranked solely by relevance." But we need to stay vigilant. If these agents aren't strictly regulated, we risk ending up with AI assistants turned into aggressive salespeople, subtly (or not so subtly) pushing us toward sponsored products or those generating the best commissions.

What we expect from an AI agent is help and neutral advice, not a disguised salesperson optimizing their revenue. The question of transparency and alignment of interests will be crucial: are these agents truly working for us, or for the platforms and merchants that pay them?

A.
