Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Yesterday, we covered Spotify's move to become the home for AI-generated personal audio, with its new CLI letting Claude Code or Codex push custom podcasts straight into your library. 24 hours later, OpenAI drops three new realtime audio models and officially pulls its Realtime API out of beta. Coincidence? More like a pretty clear signal.

The headline release is GPT-Realtime-2: GPT-5-class reasoning, context window jumping from 32K to 128K tokens, five adjustable reasoning effort levels, interruption handling, and tone control that adapts to context (calm during problem-solving, empathetic when the user gets frustrated). On Big Bench Audio, the model scores 96.6% versus 81.4% for the previous generation. Benchmarks never tell the full story, but the jump is real. Alongside it, Realtime-Translate handles live translation across 70+ languages at 0.034 USD per minute, and Realtime-Whisper streams transcription at 0.017 USD per minute.

What actually changes here isn't so much the technical leap as the operational maturity. The Realtime API leaving beta is the green light product teams were waiting for to ship voice in production without fearing a full rewrite three months later. And at this quality level, the pricing finally becomes defensible for high-volume use cases.

Cross-referenced with yesterday's Spotify announcement, the picture sharpens: OpenAI provides the engine, Spotify opens up distribution, agents handle the rest. Voice stops being a demo gimmick and becomes a default interaction layer. If you're working on a product with any audio dimension, now is probably a good time to reopen the backlog. And if you don't have one, your competitors are already thinking about it for you.

Alex.
