Our take
Hi Dotikers!
110 billion dollars. It takes a moment for that number to really land.
By announcing last Friday the largest private fundraise in tech history, OpenAI didn't just beat its own record set barely a year ago with its $41 billion round ; it changed its scale in a dizzying way. Amazon is investing $50 billion, Nvidia and SoftBank $30 billion each. The pre-money valuation climbs to $730 billion, up from $500 billion just four months ago.
What's striking about this deal isn't just the size of the checks ; it's their strategic nature. Amazon becomes the exclusive cloud provider for the Frontier platform, the very one we discussed last week with the alliances signed with BCG, McKinsey, Accenture, and Capgemini. The loop closes: OpenAI is simultaneously consolidating its infrastructure, its commercial distribution, and its enterprise deployment channels. It's a three-tiered maneuver rarely seen in the industry.
Of course, $110 billion is impressive, but it also comes with obligations. The company is targeting $600 billion in infrastructure spending by 2030, against a revenue projection of $280 billion over the same period. The gap is colossal, and that's precisely where the vertigo sets in. OpenAI is betting that infrastructure will trump everything else, including model quality. A bold wager in a sector where Anthropic raises $30 billion at a $380 billion valuation, Google builds Gemini internally, and Meta distributes its models for free.
Microsoft, absent from this round despite having injected over $13 billion since 2019, says "nothing has changed." We'll have the decency not to laugh too loudly.
The real question is no longer whether OpenAI can raise money. It's whether revenue will ever live up to the ambition.
