Our take
Hi Dotikers!
Last week, we looked at OpenAI's acquisition of TBPN, a move that said less about media than about one company's determination to control the narrative surrounding its products. This week, that narrative is medical, and the figures fueling it are hard to ignore.
OpenAI has released usage data showing that its American users send roughly two million messages per week related to health insurance. Of those, nearly 600,000 come from areas described as "hospital deserts," meaning places where the nearest hospital is more than a thirty-minute drive away. Seven out of ten health queries arrive outside standard clinic hours. Wyoming, the least populated state in the country, records the highest rate of messages from these zones. That is not a geographical coincidence; it is a fairly precise portrait of America's healthcare divide.
OpenAI accompanies this data with a high-profile launch: ChatGPT Health, a dedicated interface allowing users to connect medical records, lab results, and wellness apps, developed in collaboration with more than 260 physicians across 60 countries. The company is careful to note that the tool is designed to assist, not replace, doctors. A reassuring formula, and probably a sincere one, except that millions of Americans are already using it as a substitute simply because they have no alternative.
That is where the problem lies. OpenAI acknowledges in its own report that AI "will not reopen shuttered hospitals or restore discontinued maternity units." Translation: the company is building a commercial product on the consequences of a broken healthcare system, while declining to call it what it is. When 40 million people consult a chatbot every day for medical questions, that is not a sign that AI has solved a problem. It is a sign that a much older problem was never solved in the first place. GPT-5 can improve its scores on medical benchmarks all it likes; it will not replace the general practitioner that Wyoming can no longer recruit.
