Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Suno today launches v5, a new generation of its music engine that promises more realistic voices, better sound quality, and greater creative control. The model is said to be well above previous versions, with a reported ELO score of 1,293, and is initially available to Pro and Premier subscribers.

The timing is no accident. The race in generative music hinges both on perceived quality and on usability. If the demos produced with v5 cross the threshold of “almost pro” for the general public, the whole ecosystem moves closer to a point where a track born from a prompt can rival a studio demo.

Let’s admit it: if we were still trying to find the line between inspiration and imitation, it grows blurrier every week.

But then comes the thorny part. Labels have intensified their actions against Suno and Udio since 2024, accusing them of training on copyrighted recordings without authorization. These lawsuits, filed in the U.S., seek heavy statutory damages and clearly raise the issues of consent and compensation. More recently, an amended complaint alleges “stream ripping” practices on YouTube, bypassing technical protections.

The debate goes beyond technology, touching on respect for the rules of the game and trust. In Europe, GEMA has also filed a case in Munich, arguing that some of Suno’s outputs are too close to famous works.
