Our take
Hi Dotikers!
This week, OpenAI announced a major partnership with AMD, Nvidia's main competitor. On the table: 6 gigawatts of computing power and a potential 10% stake in AMD. But behind these technical figures lies a much more interesting strategy.
Until now, Nvidia has been the undisputed king of AI chips. So dominant that its stock has reached new heights, making it the world's most valuable company. The problem? This dependence is becoming risky for OpenAI, which needs ever-increasing power to train its models.
By teaming up with AMD, OpenAI isn't really trying to abandon Nvidia (they just signed a $100 billion deal with them last month). The goal is rather to diversify its supply sources and not put all its eggs in one basket. Kind of like having two electricity providers so you never risk a blackout.
For AMD, this is obviously a breath of fresh air and validation: their chips are finally being considered a credible alternative. For the rest of the industry, it's a clear signal: the demand for computing power is so explosive that there's room for several giants.
