Our take

Hi Dotikers!

Yann LeCun, Meta's Chief AI Scientist, is reportedly preparing to leave the company to launch his own startup. For those who aren't familiar with him yet, we're talking about a true monument of artificial intelligence: a French researcher, pioneer of deep learning, and winner of the prestigious Turing Award, the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in computer science!

This departure is part of a trend shaking the AI world: big brains are leaving tech giants to create their own labs. Ilya Sutskever, former OpenAI chief scientist, launched Safe Superintelligence in 2024 and has already raised $2 billion for an astronomical valuation of $32 billion, and this without even having a product on the market! Mira Murati, former OpenAI CTO, also created Thinking Machines Lab in February, raising $2 billion for a valuation of $12 billion.

The question now is: will LeCun succeed in attracting as many investors?

His departure isn't really a surprise. LeCun was reportedly frustrated by Meta's new internal rules that complicate research publication. Worse still, the company's recent restructuring allegedly placed him under the direction of Alexandr Wang.

But what makes this news exciting is especially the direction his new company might take. LeCun has long criticized the industry's obsession with large language models like ChatGPT. He wants to explore other paths, notably with his JEPA architecture, which aims to create AI systems that learn by observing the physical world, a bit like a child does.

In other words: one of France's brightest AI minds thinks everyone is going down the wrong path... and he intends to prove it to us!
